This course will examine the current evidence-based practices used within the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) for the treatment of depression, anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as other readjustment issues which prevent the Veteran from fully reintegrating back into civilian life. The course will also examine some of the other complimentary, non-traditional therapies currently being use by Veterans hospitals and clinics around the country. These include, but are not limited to, yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, equine therapy, and oxygen therapy.

Course Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to list at least three evidence-based therapies currently being used by the Department of Veterans Affairs for behavioral health diagnoses
  2. Participants will be able to describe the application of the evidence-based therapies, used by the Department of Veterans Affairs
  3. Participants will be able to analyze the benefits and drawbacks of these evidence-based practices with Veterans
  4. Participants will be able to list at least four complimentary, non-traditional therapies offered at VA hospitals and clinics

Target Audience

Target audience includes psychologists, social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, recovery coaches, peer specialists, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, and substance abuse counselors for this intermediate level of instruction.
